Donald Bonnell Fobes
Donald B. Fobes, 91, of Moorings Park Naples, FL, formerly of Indianapolis, died Dec. 5, 2003 of natural causes. Mr. Fobes was born in Crawfordsville, IN on Jan. 28, 1912 the son of William W. and Helen (Bonnell) Fobes.He attended Goshen High School, IN. He was a basketball star. In 1930, Sweet Sixteen Tournament play versus Muncie Central, he shot a 77.8 field goal percentage, which was a state record that stood for 29 years.He was a graduate of Wabash College in 1934 with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and was the basketball team;s leading scorer his sophomore year and was also a member of varsity tennis team.He married Shiela Brown of Indianapolis in 1937. He served his country in the U.S. Navy as supply officer in NYC in 1943.He began his working career as a sales manager with Paper Package Co. (subsidiary of Eli Lilly Co.) in 1934. He became president of Paper Package Co. in 1954 and the president of Creative Packaging Co. in 1961 retiring in 1970.Mr. Fobes was a member of and served on the Vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church. He also served on the Board of Directors of Flanner House and the United Way Fund of Indianapolis. He was a founding member of Crooked Stick Country Club. Mr. Fobes served Wabash College as trustee from 1977-1989, Capital Campaign Chairman in 1971. Wabash awarded him Alumni Award of Merit in 1976 and an honorary LL.D. in 1985.Mr. Fobes was an active golf enthusiast all his life and had a passion for playing the piano and for sailing.Mr.Fobes is survived by his wife, Shiela Brown Fobes of Mooring Park, Naples, FL; daughter, Lynne (Steve) Marion of Scottsdale, AZ; son, Rick Fobes of Naperville, IL; 8 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and 2 more on the way. One daughter, Sherry Hollett preceded him in death in 2000.The family will receive friends at Trinity Episcopal Church from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 followed by services at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Don Fobes Memorial Fund at Wabash College (for music education), P.O. Box 352, Crawfordsville, IN 47933-0352. (Indianapolis Star)
